How To Look Expensive
On A Budget
In my closet I have at least six striped shirts, because they work with almost any outfit. I lucked up and found a Polo Ralph Lauren Striped Shirt on eBay for $25.00 a couple of years ago which is a bargain compared to paying $168.00.
I came across Meghan Markle Wimbledon attire which included a blue striped shirt, off white pants and a Altuzarra Ghianada Braided Saddle Bag, but what’s captivating is how well the stripes photographed “she looks stunning”. My best guess, she’s wearing a Polo Ralph Lauren, and she paid Royal dollars for it with a hefty price of $690.00!
Stripes are timeless, so you can pull this iconic shirt out of your closet anytime and pair it with jeans, skirts, trousers and look expensive without much effort.
STRIPE WIDTH
Thin stripes make you look taller, and gives a more subtle sophisticated look.
Wide stripes are more chic and trendy, although they can overwhelm a smaller fame.
CONTRAST
Bold (high-contrast stripes) definitely emphasize hight more - plus if you are looking for a more bold and standout look, this will be a more suitable choice.
FIT OF CLOTHING
Baggy or oversized clothing give you a rich elegant look, especially when worn with a straight or wide-leg pair of jeans (examples below).
Fitted or tailored shirt with narrow vertical stripes give a more softer intellectual look.
Round neck ribbed tank top with trouser shorts
This outfit is considered low effort with a rich mentality. She is chic from head to toe and this outfit is perfect for a summer beach vacation (it’s giving 90210 vibes). There’s a similar style tank top on SHEIN for under five dollars, similar shorts on Amazon and shoes Amazon. You can accessorize with gold or silver jewelry, but gold is trending and will give it a more rich elegant look.

You can never go wrong with classics looks! Who knew black, red, green and navy stripes could look this good, and I love that they put their own spin on each look. They decided to style their shirts with light wash jeans which is trending at the moment. To get this look ZARA has some similar style shirts in green, navy and red.
Navy stripe shirt with belted white pleated shorts
Word on the street is, “the wider the stripe, the more expensive it looks” and I agree! This outfit is amazing and the stripes are so pronounced which makes a bold impact on the overall look. The tailored fitted shorts with the gold buckle belt are a contributing wow factor. And again to finish the overall look I highly recommend gold accessories with navy blue.
Candy apple red stripe shirt with floor length satin skirt
I did not see this coming and it’s quite unique! A floor length silk skirt with a striped button-up, and the colors match perfectly – “wow”! I call this outfit Pinch-Me Red … lol because pinch me please, I love it! I would definitely walk into a fine dining restaurant wearing this ensemble.
We all have upscale sides of town and when you are shopping or dining, “you dress the part”. Here in Birmingham – Hoover, Homewood or Mountain Brook are a few places you would want to put some personality into your outfits. If I saw Pinch-Me Red walking or dinning I would have to stop or interrupt her, to tell her how beautiful she looked!
Gold accessories would compliment this look, and a black strappy pair of heels like these Nine West, or if you are going for comfort a solid pair of white tennis or adidas would look good too.
Light blue striped shirt with dark blue cuffed jeans
“She went for it and nailed it.” The light blue stripes paired with the indigo and burgundy are color rich. I call this outfit The Indigo Girl – “chef’s kiss”. This outfit is giving 80’s vibes, especially because of the shoes. I can see Tracee Ellis Ross or Solange Knowles wearing this outfit.
Chocolate striped shirt with cream linen pants
Thinking outside the box equals chocolate stripes! This is one shirt I’ll be purchasing very soon, because you rarely see an ensemble with brown stripes. I call this outfit ”she‘ confident “ because you must be to pair brown and green together, and carry a neon yellow tote bag but-it-works!
Oversized black and white stripe shirt with white jeans
Classic black and white stripes will always be a staple for every household and can be worn year round in any setting. If you have a black and white striped shirt you have a working wardrobe, because it can be paired with trouser, denim shorts and blazers of all colors for a fresh look. This oversized relaxed are worn to catch wind, but still has the comfort factor.
Fashion rules to remember .. are looser fitting clothing makes you look slimmer. Consider going up a size or two in pants, wearing a oversized shirt, buying straight or wide-leg pants or jeans. It gives the illusions of a smaller frame because your not being hugged in your hip-thighs or arms-stomach.
Loose stripe shirt with long denim skirt
If you want movement pairing stripes with a denim skirt is a high-fashion move. This is the ultimate working outfit but still classy and vibrant. In my opinion this is one of my favorite vacation outfits because it’s comfortable but chic.
On vacations you do a lot walking, dining at restaurants and in-out of hotels, but with a switch of a shoe you go from chic-casual to chic-chic.
Best denim skirt with stretch (elasticity) and great price points are Target and a.n .a.
(I purchased my skirt denim skirt from Target last summer and I love it). I’ve purchased from other brands like Mango, Old Navy and Nordstrom, but they don’t stretch if you have curves – still cute, but no stretch.
